Thyroglobulin (TG) is a glycoprotein that is produced by the follicular cells of the thyroid gland when stimulation is received by the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). TG is a precursor for the synthesis of Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). It is also an important reservoir of iodine for normal physiological needs. TG undergoes metabolism in the liver and is recycled in the thyroid glands. TG levels are monitored to check the functioning of the thyroid gland.
